My novel study this week and last week.

NOVEL STUDY
WALT self manage our reading time while maintaining meaning and understanding in an extended text.

I am in the Harry Potters Reading group.  This week we are reading the novel Under the Mountain  It was written by Maurice Gee.

You can find all of my work in my novel study doc in my Reading folder.  It is titled ‘Harry Potters Novel Study Task Sheet - T2W2-3’.

Reading Plan:

We have decided to read the following parts of our novel on these days:

Day One: Page 1 to Page 30

Day Two: Page 31 to Page 60

Day Three: Page 61 to Page 90

Day Four: Page 91 to Page 120

Day Five: Page 121 to Page 150

Day Six: Page 151 to Page 177

By the end of day six, the novel should be finished!

Reading Tasks:

These will be completed each day, after I have read my section of the novel.

Task One: Extending Vocabulary
Choose 2 new words you have come across while reading today.
-Write the words.
-Write a direct quote from the book using quote marks and write the page number you found it.
-Now write down what you think it means, then find the meaning of the word in a dictionary or online dictionary and write it down.

Task Two: Summarising
Write a summary of what you have read today.  Remember a summary should be written in your own words and should be quite brief (short).

Task Three: Evaluating
Write a personal response.  What did you like about what you read today?  Why?  What didn’t you like?  Why?  (This could be based on the characters actions, setting or plot) If you are writing this on Days 1, 2, or 3, write a prediction about what you think might happen next.

Task Four
The daily question

Daily Questions

Day One: Summarising and Evaluating
Describe the main setting.  How important is it?  Does the setting
help set a mood?

Day Two: Evaluating, Visualising, Inferring
Analyse two characters.  Describe their physical characteristics (what they look like) and their personality traits (e.g. friendly, kind, horrible, nasty).  Use a Venn Diagram to complete this task.

Day Three: Summarising, Evaluating, Inferring
What is the plot?  Explain what the conflict (problem) or goal is and how the character is trying to solve or achieve it.

Day Four: Evaluating, Inferring
How have characters developed since the start of the story?  Has anyone shown a different side?  What would you do if you were that character?

Day Five: Predicting, Inferring
What do you predict the ending will be?  Why do you think this?

Day Six: Evaluating, Synthesising, Making Connections
What is the theme of your novel?  What message, moral, or lesson is the author trying to get across.  Was the theme explicit or implicit (did the author make it obvious or did you have to use your inference skills to figure it out?).

Begin your work below...

Task 1 + 2 + 3 + Daily Question - Day One:
  1. Rangitoto- It means bleeding skies.
  2. Frenzied- Wildly Excited
  3. It’s about 2 twins (a boy and a girl) who went to visit their aunt and uncle and a mysterious man with with superpowers and some creepy old people inside a house where nobody ever sees the light turn on.
  4. I hate the old people because they are creepy and I like the mysterious man because he has got superpowers.
  5. The setting is really important because it is real instead of a blue screen.

Task 1 + 2 + 3 + Daily Question - Day Two:
Hearse: Converted hearse. 42 I think it means criminals.- Build to haul dead people.
Magnetism:46 Sticky- Strong attractive power or a charm.
Two twins are getting trained by an old man the he say will one day save their race.
The twins learned a power and Mr jones won’t tell them why he’s training them
The twins- Trying to save the world by learning new powers.

Task 1 + 2 + 3 + Daily Question - Day Three:
  1. Have you heard of Symbiosis.- A sickness- Interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both.
  2. Practical-Of or concerned with the actual doing or use of something.
  3. Today the twins went inside the wilberforces house and discovered they were giant slugs.
  4. When Mr. Wilberforce shape-shifts and I sort of hate it when the twins got stuck.
  5. The twins try to save the world from the wilberforces.

Task 1 + 2 + 3 + Daily Question - Day Four:
  1. Companion- I think this means team member- A person or animal with whom one spends a lot of time or with whom one travels
  2. Angular- Might be something strange- (of an object, outline, or shape) Having angles or sharp corners
  3. The wilberforce’s tried tricking them them to come with them by tell the twins the house their parents lived in go burned.
  4. I like the part when the wilberforce’s tried tricking them and I hate it since Mr jones won’t tell them anything.
  5. The twins have gotten stronger.

Task 1 + 2 + 3 + Daily Question - Day Five:
  1. Elated- It might mean tired- Make (someone) ecstatically happy: "I felt elated at winning".
  2. Grimacing- I think it means saying something in a scared voice- A twisted expression on a person's face, typically expressing disgust, pain, or wry amusement.
  3. They faked their death so the wilberforce’s think they’re dead.
  4. I like the part when the wilberforce’s had a fight with Mr Jones and I hate it when Rachel nearly died.
  5. I predict the mathewson twins are gonna win because everyday they are getting stronger and stronger.

Task 1 + 2 + 3 + Daily Question - Day Six:
  1. Oblivion- It might mean destruction- The state of being unaware or unconscious of what is happening.
  2. chugging-I think it means running- Emit a series of regular muffled explosive sounds, as of an engine running slowly.
  3. This is their last fight with the wilberforces. If they lose than the world ends if they win than the world is safe.
  4. I hate it when ricky dies and I like the part when the wilberforce’s lose.

DIFFERENT ENDINGS!
One way this could end is that if one of the wilberforces survived and are still alive and they killed theo, and destroyed the whole world.

Another way this could end is as if Theo didn’t have enough time to escape the explosion and he died.
